Seeking out soil secrets

Farmers seeking advice about which machines and techniques will help protect their soils while achieving efficient crop production found plenty of ideas to consider at Tillage-Live 2019.

The event, held at Deenethorpe Airfield, near Corby, Northamptonshire, and organised by the Agricultural Engineers Association, attracted an audience of some 1,500.

Among the key attractions were features on drilling through cover crops; the importance of using the right tyre pressures for all fieldwork and the latest techniques in spraying.

The Environment Agency also took the opportunity to inform attendees about the latest guidance on abstraction licence changes for previously exempt activities.

Simon Brown of Amazone, chairman of the event’s organizing committee, said it offers a unique opportunity:

“We have all the major manufacturers working alongside each other in the same field, so visitors can assess the machines working in the same soils and conditions”.

While much of the interest was in the range of machines suited to reduced cultivation systems, he said many visitors also expressed interest in the range of different cultivating styles available.

That observation was backed by Paul Creasy, Lemken’s UK general manager, who noted that – as well as enquiries for drills and other cultivators – visitors had also expressed interest in the company’s range of ploughs.

First time exhibitor Abrey Agricultural Ltd demonstrated the Ziegler cultivation range, which it imports from Germany, for the first time in the UK at the event:

“We received some excellent enquiries for the machines, and will be setting up on-farm demonstrations in the coming days” says owner Toby Abrey.

“We were impressed with the layout of the event and with the organisers, who were very good to work with”.

The AEA confirms that 2010’s event is provisionally due to be held on Wednesday 9th September 2020. The venue has yet to be confirmed.
