Farm Carbon Calculator upgrade released

  • Improvements to the Farm Carbon Calculator continue with the latest upgrade to one of the industry’s most popular carbon calculators, which enables farmers and growers to measure and understand the carbon footprint of their business

In this upgrade there are a large number of improvements to the data and calculations that underpin the tool. Being up to date with the latest science is always the aim of the Calculator, meaning carbon reports of users are more accurate.

Updates to emissions factors across the Calculator sections have been made in line with 2023 UK GHG conversion factors, UK GHG Inventory 1990-2021 and recent amendments to IPCC chapter 11. In addition, new options have been added to allow users to capture more detailed information on bought-in products, including adjuvants, fencing materials, liquid fertilisers, amino acid amendments and recycled packaging products.

Lizzy Parker, Carbon Calculator Manager said, “We update the data underlying the Farm Carbon Calculator annually. We are really grateful to our community of farmers and growers who help us develop the tool to be able to footprint diverse businesses across UK agricultural and horticultural industries in such detail.”

In the race for farmers and growers to reach net zero carbon and beyond, the Farm Carbon Calculator is focussed on providing the best tools to enable them to measure and manage carbon in their businesses.

Alongside updates to the data underlying the Calculations, a number of new features have been included in the recent update. Users can now switch between accounting methods for capital items (Inventory) and waste disposal depending on the purpose for which they are producing a report. The Farm Carbon Calculator is increasingly used internationally, and to meet the needs of non-UK users, so the option to account for electricity from non-UK grids has been added.
