Four-cylinder tractor targets high-output field work

Claas is expanding its tractor range with three four-cylinder models delivering up to 180hp, combining relatively low operating weight with continuously variable transmission technology and the hydraulic capacity required for demanding cultivation and establishment work. 

The new Arion 5 Cmatic series comprises the 145hp Arion 5.140, 165hp Arion 5.160 and 180hp Arion 5.180. All are powered by a 4.5-litre four-cylinder engine and use a power-split continuously variable transmission. 

The range-topping Arion 5.180 Cmatic has a maximum torque output of 730Nm at 1,500rpm and an unladen weight of 7,700kg, giving a claimed power-to-weight ratio of 42.8kg/hp. 

Claas positions the tractors as compact alternatives to its larger six-cylinder models, with sufficient output for implements from 3m to 5m while retaining manoeuvrability for grassland, loader and transport applications. 

The combination of engine output and machine weight is particularly relevant to soil management. A lower base weight can help limit the ballast required for some operations, although actual axle loading will depend on specification, implement loading, tyre selection and ballast strategy. 

The Cmatic transmission incorporates adaptive drivetrain management, including Auto load anticipation. The system detects an approaching load increase, such as when a cultivation implement is lowered, and proactively increases engine speed while adjusting the transmission ratio. This is intended to maintain forward performance and traction without requiring constant driver intervention. 

The tractors are also equipped with Proactiv front axle suspension and a fully suspended cab, supporting higher transport speeds and operator comfort during long field days. 

Hydraulic capacity is up to 150l/min through a load-sensing system with up to six control circuits. A front linkage and K80 hitch with a 4t drawbar load are available for heavy implements, trailers and slurry or manure equipment. 

For field operations, the optional Cemos dialog system can assist with machine optimisation, including ballast and tyre-pressure recommendations. This provides a potential link between tractor setup, traction efficiency and soil protection. 

Guidance and task-management functions are provided through the Cemis 1200 terminal and Claas connect. Guidance lines can be planned remotely and shared between machines, while a new automatic reference-track change function can select the appropriate track according to the machine’s position and direction. 

This could be particularly useful where several machines are operating across the same field, helping to maintain consistent traffic patterns and reduce unnecessary overlap. 

The new Arion 5 Cmatic range will be shown publicly at Innov-agri in France on 9 and 10 September.
