New Holland’s large square baler technology combining hydraulic slip-clutch control, real-time sensing and artificial intelligence has received an EIMA Technical Innovation Award 2026.
The system, developed for high-capacity balers, is designed to improve crop flow, reduce interruptions and increase daily output by responding automatically to changing crop conditions.
At the heart of the system is a hydraulically controlled slip clutch combined with real-time torque sensing and AI-based controls. The technology continuously monitors driveline loads and crop flow, allowing the baler to respond to peak loads without necessarily stopping crop intake.
Conventional overload protection systems can interrupt crop flow when torque limits are exceeded. The new approach instead allows controlled clutch slip to absorb short-term load peaks and smooth the loads transmitted through the driveline.
The system incorporates auto-tuning, self-calibration and predictive driveline protection, enabling it to adapt to changes in crop conditions, component wear and operating temperature.
Tractor-baler automation also adjusts forward speed to make better use of the baler’s available capacity.
According to New Holland, the combination of these functions is intended to deliver higher daily throughput and bale output, while providing more consistent performance as field and crop conditions change.
The technology is also designed to reduce the need for operator intervention, allowing the baler to manage variations in crop flow and driveline loading automatically.
The award-winning system will be demonstrated at EIMA 2026 in Bologna as part of the latest developments in large square baling technology.
